Case 1 : Moving groups of older people

A charity needed help to move a large group of vulnerable older people, many in their 80's, from sheltered housing to a newly developed complex with more amenities including a restaurant and care home.

This decanting process was challenging as many of the clients did not want to move. We made the event as positive and easy as possible - we helped arrange the furniture, curtains, utilities and change of address details. We had an experienced team of packers, removers and unpackers on hand to minimise the stress and to make their new home look as similar as possible to the old one. Each client was allocated a dedicated move manager to be with them throughout the process  and who was with them throughout moving day.

Although there is support at their new home, we also provided extra emotional and practical support in those first days after the move as we were familiar with the old home and knew what was important to them. One client said afterwards "there was many a time during this period when I really thought I would call the whole thing off - if it had not been for you!"

Case 2. Making way for families – helping people to downsize

Peabody Trust has worked in partnership with us to help tenants downsize, thus freeing up family homes in Westminster.

As part of an incentive package, tenants were offered assistance to downsize quickly into properties in a block of newly refurbished and new-build flats.  Tenants were helped to sort out what goods to take, to dispose of goods, with packing, organisation of utilities and furniture removals and  much needed emotional support, as they were leaving homes they had occupied for many years.  These tenants had voluntarily requested to be moved from larger 3+ bedroom family-sized flats to ne or two bedroom units.

Peabody Trust housing management said “this kind of incentive and practical help forms a valuable part of the overcrowding – under-occupation strategy.  We need to use a variety of methods to achieve our objectives and this one worked well – we moved nine households in just a couple of weeks and the released flats have already being refurbished to provide family homes.  We are now using Seamless Relocation to help another twenty tenants move into our newly built flats in Peabody Avenue."
